When I am in a store and see an imported wine with which I am unfamiliar, I turn the bottle over to see who imported the wine. There are names of certain importers that I regard so highly, I would buy the wine without knowing anything else about it. These are the Importer Partners I will approach about doing business. They have all the same qualities in common:
They are world travelers. These importers go to the vineyards of France, Chile, Italy, or whatever other country, every summer for months to look at the vines. They work with vineyard managers to make sure that leaves are cut back, that pests are kept at bay, they look at planting densities, they ask that fruit be cut back at veraison (stage in grape development when the grapes turn color).
They are tireless champions of temperature control. In the winery during fermentation, from the winery to port, from their port to ours, their presence is felt. Everywhere the wine is, they ensure that the wine does not get too hot.
They are not marketers. The great importers of the world began importing when there were no numbers in the US to support importing as a means to make a fortune. They did it because they fell in love with the grape or with specific countries, or both. These importer pioneers did what they did regardless if the American public understood it or not.
The United States is on pace to become the number one consumer of wine in the world by 2010. Now, anyone can import a Pinot Grigio or a Shiraz with a cute label and sell it. That is marketing. That is not what real importers do. Real importers bring in the most high quality wines they can scout, and then search for the market where they can be sold. Lee Edwards Distributing will not bring in the most household names imaginable. Lee Edwards Distributing will bring in the best wines possible.
Imported By Michael Skurnik should be all one needs to see to know they want to buy a wine. That is the level of dedication of my partners. That is the level of my dedication.
